What Fescue Actually Does

The endophyte story, the reproductive consequences, and why a bull developed on toxic grass is worth more than you think.

Approximately 35 million acres of pasture in the United States are covered by tall fescue infected with the endophyte fungus Neotyphodium coenophialum. The fungus lives inside the grass — in the stems, leaf sheaths, and seeds — and produces alkaloids, including ergovaline, that affect cattle physiology in ways that range from inconvenient to economically catastrophic.
Missouri has more infected fescue acreage than any other state. Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia, and the eastern fringes of Oklahoma and Kansas all carry significant fescue pressure. The commercial cattle producer in these states is managing against fescue toxicosis as a baseline condition of their operation, whether they acknowledge it explicitly or not.
Most seedstock catalogs were written in Nebraska.
The Mechanism
Ergovaline and related alkaloids produced by the endophyte bind to dopamine receptors in cattle, causing vasoconstriction — a narrowing of blood vessels. In warm weather, when cattle need to dissipate heat through blood flow to the skin, vasoconstriction prevents that heat dissipation. The result: elevated body temperature, reduced feed intake, reduced milk production, and — most importantly for a commercial cow-calf producer — disrupted reproductive cycling.
A cow under fescue stress in late summer, when she needs to conceive for the following year's calf crop, has a suppressed reproductive system. Estrus cycles may be irregular or absent. Conception rates drop. The open cow rate rises. The financial consequence of a 10% increase in open cows across a 300-cow operation is not a rounding error.
Most people know fescue is a problem. Fewer understand that it acts primarily through the reproductive system — suppressing estrus, reducing conception rates, and creating the open cows that cost the commercial producer more than almost any other single management failure.
Cattle that are genetically adapted to fescue conditions — that maintain reproductive cycling under ergovaline stress, that maintain body condition on infected grass through August, that shed their winter coats early and manage body temperature effectively — are demonstrating adaptation that most seedstock marketing ignores.
Why Development Environment Matters
A bull developed on clean pasture in a Midwestern drylot development pen has not been tested against fescue stress. His EPDs predict performance across a reference population that may or may not include fescue-country daughters. His phenotype looks correct because it was developed in optimal conditions.
A bull developed on toxic endophyte fescue in Goodson, Missouri or Mammoth Spring, Arkansas or Holly Springs, Mississippi has been through the filter. His dam maintained body condition on that grass and cycled back on schedule despite ergovaline pressure — or she was culled. The development environment is a selection pressure that the EPD does not fully capture.
Hawk Angus Farms in Goodson, Missouri and JnJ Angus Farms in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas and Twisted Fork Angus in Holly Springs, Mississippi are all developing and selecting cattle in fescue-country environments. When those programs sell bulls, the bulls have been proven on the grass the buyer is running. That specificity of environmental proof has a value that the EPD cannot replace.
The Practical Advice
For commercial producers in the fescue belt: buy bulls from programs that developed them on fescue. Not just bred in the region — developed and selected across multiple generations in the specific conditions you are running your cows in. Ask whether the donor cows that produced the genetics were selecting for fescue adaptation or whether the genetics came from a high-input development environment.
Ask about early shedding. A cow that sheds her winter coat by early May in the Missouri or Arkansas Ozarks is demonstrating heat tolerance management that fescue-susceptible animals do not. Ask whether the program tracks this trait. The programs that do are the ones paying attention to what fescue actually does to cattle.
The genetics that perform on fescue are worth a premium in fescue country. The programs that have been selecting for them understand this. The catalogs that lead with yearling weight percentiles in Nebraska are selling something else.
