What the number captures, what it misses, and why the phenotype always wins the argument.

There is a sentence I have said at cattle evaluations more times than I can count: the EPD isn't the animal. I do not mean this as a dismissal of data. I mean it as a precise statement about what an Expected Progeny Difference is and what it is not — and the distinction matters enormously to anyone making genetics decisions for a living.


An EPD is a prediction. It is a statistical estimate, calculated from a dataset of related animals and their progeny, of what an individual animal is likely to transmit to its offspring for a specific trait. It is a useful tool. It carries variance. And it is, by definition, not a measurement of the animal in front of you.


What an EPD Actually Is


The accuracy value attached to an EPD is the key number that most commercial producers never look at. An accuracy of 0.30 means the EPD is estimated from limited data and the actual transmitting ability of that animal could be substantially different from the estimate. An accuracy of 0.90 means the estimate is based on a large progeny dataset and is unlikely to change much.


A high-accuracy EPD on a bull with 500 progeny daughters is a different tool than a low-accuracy EPD on a yearling with genomic estimates only. Both are called EPDs. They are not the same thing.


A yearling bull with a genomic EPD is a prediction about a prediction. A bull with 300 daughters in 12 herds has a production record. These are categorically different levels of evidence, and treating them the same is the most expensive mistake in registered cattle purchasing.

The beef industry has made enormous strides in EPD accuracy and prediction methodology. I am not arguing against that progress. I am arguing that the tool is only as good as the understanding of what it measures — and most sale catalogs do not give buyers enough context to use it correctly.


What the Phenotype Tells You That the EPD Cannot


When I walk into a pasture to evaluate cattle, I am looking at the realized animal. Not the predicted animal. Not the estimated transmitting ability. The animal that has already integrated its genetics with its environment, its management, its nutrition, and its history — and produced a result I can observe directly.


Jan Bonsma spent his career establishing that an animal's external appearance is a readable record of its internal function. The way a cow carries herself, the character of her eye, the expression of her secondary sex characteristics, the condition of her feet and legs — these are honest signals of endocrine balance, structural soundness, and adaptability. They are not cosmetic observations. They are diagnostics.


The phenotype is the realized animal. It integrates genetics, environment, management, and history into a single observable package. No prediction model does that. The animal does it for you, if you know how to look.

An EPD for calving ease estimates what the bull's calves will do at birth across a large population. The phenotypic evaluation of a bull's feet and legs, his body capacity, his structural correctness — these tell you what is likely to happen to those calves' feet at year eight in your herd. EPDs measure traits at specific life stages. Structural evaluation predicts productive life.


The Sequence That Works


In my evaluations, the sequence is always the same. Structure and phenotype first, because the animal in front of me has already proved something about itself that no prediction had yet estimated when the animal was a calf. Performance second, because what the animal has actually done in its environment is more reliable evidence than what it was predicted to do. Pedigree third, because a proven pedigree documents what a genetic line has delivered across many relatives over many years. EPDs fourth — at that point they are confirmation or they are a flag to look closer.


This sequence is not anti-data. It is a calibration of data by reliability. The most reliable information is what I can observe directly. The least reliable is a statistical estimate from a limited dataset on an unproven animal.


The highest-selling bulls in this industry — the ones whose progeny have proven themselves in commercial feedlots and in registered cow herds across multiple states — earned those prices because buyers saw the phenotype, knew the performance, trusted the pedigree, and used the EPD to confirm what they already believed. Not the other way around.


The Practical Implication


The next time you open a sale catalog and find yourself ranking bulls by their EPD percentiles before you have seen a photograph or read the production notes, pause. The EPD is one piece of information. It was calculated from animals that are not the bull you are evaluating. It is an estimate with variance attached to it.


Look at the dam's production record. Look at the sire's daughter information. Look at where this bull was developed and in what conditions. Look at the photograph with the eye of someone who evaluates cattle for a living — not for cosmetics, but for function. Feet and legs, body capacity, structural correctness, secondary sex characteristics.


Then look at the EPD. It will mean more, and you will use it correctly.


The EPD isn't the animal. But used as the last step in a complete evaluation, it is a useful tool. Used as the first — and only — step, it is how programs go wrong.
